What is Alopecia ?
Alopecia means hair loss, the immune system has been lowered and it attacks the hair follicles, causing the hair loss, the follicle is the area the hair grows from within the skin. Specialists do not know why the immune system attacks the follicles. It can happen at any age, male or female, also children.
Alopecia areata usually begins when clumps of hair fall out, resulting in totally smooth, round hairless patches on the scalp. In some cases the hair may become thinner without noticeable patches of baldness, or it may grow and break off, leaving short stubs (called “exclamation point” hair). In rare cases, complete loss of scalp hair and body hair occurs. The hair loss often comes and goes-hair will grow back over several months in one area but will fall out in another area.
When alopecia areata results in patches of hair loss, if the hair returns in time the new hair is not the same colour and texture as it used to be, it sometimes is more fine or very coarse, and can be white. But then again it recovers to back to how it was before. This can be very distressing as it can be very unpredictable. It can develop into Alopecia Totalis or Universalis, where it affects all body hair too. We can advise on eyebrows and eye definition. We can put you in touch with other people who have this condition to see just how well they have coped wearing a wig and what it like to wear one,or just to feel you are not the only one with this condition.
Because hair is an important part of appearance, hair loss can result in feeling unattractive & under confident.
We can help you get in control of the situation by using masking crèmes our customers return time after time for the Couvre alopecia masking creme to” cover” the patches, a partial hairpiece to match/blend into the rest of the hair, or to go straight to a wig, rather than combing over the area and losing all your hairstyle and shape just to cover the patches.
We can advise on the best method for you. To help regain your self-esteem.
Alopecia cannot be “cured” but it can be treated. Most people who have one episode will have more episodes of hair loss.
