Alopecia Areata & Totalis, Universalis

Alopecia means hair loss, the autoimmune system has been lowered and it attacks the hair follicles, causing the hair loss, the follicle is the area the hair grows from within the skin. Specialists do not know why the immune system attacks the follicles. It can happen at any age, male or female, also children.

Alopecia areata usually begins when clumps of hair fall out, resulting in totally smooth, round hairless patches on the scalp. In some cases the hair may become thinner without noticeable patches of baldness, or it may grow and break off, leaving short stubs (called "exclamation point" hair). In rare cases, complete loss of scalp hair and body hair occurs. The hair loss often comes and goes-hair will grow back over several months in one area but will fall out in another area.

When alopecia areata results in patches of hair loss, if the hair returns in time the new hair is sometimes not the same colour and texture as it used to be, it sometimes is more fine or very coarse, and can be white. This can be very distressing as it can be very unpredictable. It can develop into Alopecia Totalis or Universalis, where it affects all body hair too. We can advise on eyebrows and eye definition. We can put you in touch with other people who have this condition to see just how well they have coped wearing a wig and what it like to wear one, or just to feel you are not the only one with this condition

Hormonal hair loss

Perimenopausal and menopausal and postmenopausal.

The lack of progesterone and hormonal changes can cause this type of hair loss.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy (also called chemo) is a type of Cancer treatment that uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. There are many types of Chemotherapy, everyone will be slightly different depending on your age, cancer, sex etc.

Chemotherapy works by stopping or slowing the growth of cancer cells, which grow and divide quickly. But it can also harm healthy cells that divide quickly, such as those that line your mouth and intestines or cause your hair to grow. Damage to healthy cells may cause side effects. Often, side effects get better or go away after chemotherapy is over. It would usually take approximately 2 months after your last treatment, for the hair to start recovering, then hair growth is approximately 1/2" per month.

Some people try the "Cold cap." A frozen cap, worn when treatment is given to slow the blood supply to the hair follicles, thus slowing the hair-loss. But it is always good to investigate the wigs, just in case, so then you have a plan "B" if it fails.

However it needs to stay on an extra 3 hours during the duration of treatment.

You cannot wash your hair for 4-5 days after the cooling then no heat/stress styling is advised, no colouring the hair either, so sometimes this can be a different kind of stress.

Even if you do not lose hair you should refrain from colouring it, this could cause hair loss or sensitivity or cause a chemical reaction.

Some people choose to wear a wig because they will be unhappy with their own natural hair colouring or the hair texture changes; it loses elasticity, thus not holding the style very well.

By looking at wigs before you need one will put your mind at rest. Should you need one they can look even better than your own hair.

Some people prefer to practice with their wigs before the hair-loss occurs, that way everyone has seen it and you start to feel confident wearing it out of choice, so when the big day arrives, you are ready to wear it full time with renewed confidence. We have a range of head coverings for collecting the hair in, sleeping in, or just when you are not wearing the wig, comfortable but stylish.

Eyebrow, eyelashes and body hair will all be affected. A fantastic, realistic replacements would be the semi-permanent make up, this would add definition and realism, especially for patients with dark hair, these can be a real loss.

I am so pleased that so many clients actually like and continue to wear their wigs long after the treatment has stopped because they prefer the look to the own hair!

With either of these conditions you would be entitled to a VAT free wig. We can deduct the VAT from a wig with our exemption forms. Please ask for details

Types Of Wig

Lace front /lace capped wigs

are designed so the scalp shows through the fine lace which disappears once it is against the skin, creating a very natural hair line. Combined with a monofilament top and hand tied back, you have an extremely comfortable, secure, natural looking, replacement for your hair. Prices
from £275 in fibre and from £1000 in human hair

Monofilament based wig

are the most breathable, natural looking wigs. The sheer flesh toned top gives the appearance of scalp through the hair. Thus creating “a realistic parting” These are available in both Fibre & Human Hair wigs. Prices are usually from £160 in fibre and £1000 in Human hair

Machine weft wigs

are the less expensive wig, they are usually heavier in weight and are less cool than the monofilament ones, however they are just as fashionable and the fibre is of the same quality. Prices are usually from £125

Hand tied wigs

are the soft lined wigs, extremely light weight and flexible. Prices usually from £500 in fibre

Custom made wigs/partial pieces

A template would be made for you to get the perfect fit, with individual requirements added such as density, parting, crown areas, colours and hair type and length

For a more individual fit-shape-density, a custom made wig/piece may be required. A mould of your head or the area that needs filling will be taken for the perfect fit, colour matching and density guides will determine colour and thickness required so a piece blends into your own hair naturally, the correct base will be chosen to suit your life style and attachments required so it stays in place.

Human Hair Wigs

The hair can at times look more matt/natural. You can be more individualised, as the hair can be styled.

You have to be realistic, its only going to look as good as you can style it, it will fade when washed and in the sunlight, as they are normally pre-coloured.

Human hair can give more confidence and you can have a natural and elegant look or an informal " just got out of bed look "all in one day! Just like real hair.

The hair needs correct attention and products to help retain the elasticity and lustre of the hair cuticle.

Modacrylic Fibre Wigs

Synthetic Fibre wigs vary in texture as human hair would; these have a memory so when the wig is washed it springs back into the shape it was before it was washed. Fibre retains its shape in the rain. No need for straighteners, rollers and tongs! Very little fade of the colour in the sun. (Unless constantly in the sun)

The downside is any fibre that comes into contact with your clothes will gradually frizz with a dolly type hair look, this is not a fault it occurs when the two materials rub against each other, on jackets, scarves, shirt collars
